GitLab and Oracle Announce New AI/ML Offering

Leading DecSecOps platform, GitLab, and technology giant, Oracle recently announced the general availability of a new offering that enables artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) functionalities on shared infrastructure.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) now allows customers to run AI and ML workloads with GPU-enabled GitLab runners. GitLab customers can make the most of OCI’s built-in security, high performance, and distributed cloud capabilities to access and deploy cloud services on demand, either on premises or in the multicloud.

“GitLab is committed to helping our customers innovate faster and more efficiently. Our partnership with Oracle is critical in providing joint customers with the tools needed to build and deploy production-quality data science workflows with their software,” said David DeSanto, Chief Product Officer at GitLab. “With GPU runners on OCI, our users can run even the most demanding AI/ML workloads easily, allowing them to gain critical insights, reduce time to market, and drive meaningful business outcomes for themselves and their customers.”

As AI and ML become a crucial component of their software development strategies, organizations can benefit from the scalability, security, and reliability of running their workloads on OCI to drive innovation and growth.

“Oracle is proud to provide organizations with the high-performance and cost-effective foundation they require to build innovative, secure cloud applications,” said Leo Leung, Vice President, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and Oracle Technology. “GitLab’s focus on efficiency and speed aligns with our goals. Together we aim to help customers ship applications faster, streamline their toolchains, and reduce costs while fully taking advantage of AI and ML.”

GitLab’s 2023 DevSecOps Survey found a sharp upward trend in AI/ML implementation among over 5,000 respondents surveyed. 65% of developers surveyed reported adopting or planning to adopt AI/ML over the next three years, up from 24% the previous year. However, the complexity and resource-intensiveness of running AI/ML workloads can require significant data storage, compute resources, and specialized software tools.

The new collaboration between GitLab and OCI can reduce the time and effort spent by developers working on AI/ML workloads. They can harness the power of GPUs for faster model training and inference, which in turn improves productivity and enhances customer experiences.

Jim Mercer, Research Vice President of DevOps and DevSecOps, IDC, had this to say about the new offering: “AI and ML functionalities continue to evolve and impact how developers work, allowing them to deliver on innovation promises faster. Using automation technologies to drive velocity has been a core pillar of DevSecOps since its inception. The partnership between GitLab and Oracle recognizes the importance of offering customers tools to create secure, efficient DevSecOps environments.”
