The 2019 Annual Container Adoption Survey is sponsored by Portworx and Aqua Security. The report features insights from over 500 IT professionals across a variety of industries and company sizes. The survey, conducted in April and May 2019, asked questions about the state of container usage, tooling, environments, and barriers to adoption, to get a snapshot of the container market landscape today and its evolution over time. This year’s survey has a special emphasis on container security.
Portworx has conducted an annual Container Adoption Survey in order to understand the direction of the container market seen through the eye of businesses and users.
Containers are everywhere
This year’s survey tells a story of unabated growth in containerization with over 87% of respondents stating that they are running container technologies up from only 55% in 2017. Of those running applications in containers, nearly 90% are running them in production, up from 84% last year and 67% in 2017.
Persistent Storage is no longer a big concern
In previous years, persistent storage for containers was a big concern. In 2019, this concern is seemingly addressed by the market. It’s no longer in the top three for challenges in adopting containers. The decrease of the persistent storage concern is not surprising given developments and standardization, like the Container Storage Interface.
This year, data security, data loss and BCDR (business continuity and disaster recovery) make up the top-3 concerns, as organizations need more than just persistence to run mission-critical applications.
Data security is top of mind
As microservices landscape are becoming increasingly complex, organizations struggle to clearly define security boundaries and organizational responsibilities. Secondly, many modern organizations are now building digital services and customer support interfaces, that bad actors are becoming more important overall. This means that vulnerability management and run-time protection are more and more critical to keep the business running.
Data resiliency is strategic for survival
Data protection and backup are vital parts of container strategies. Data encryption, to prevent data exfiltration, is a key strategy for data resiliency. Vulnerability scanning and anomaly blocking in container registries, CI/CD pipelines as well as in production, contribute to data resilience, too.
Data Security is a shared responsibility
Most organizations share the responsibility for container security between the security and development teams. However, there’s a lot of variance across companies, leading to confusion and lack of clear security governance for containers.
